No: originally in the main.cf there were two lines specifying the value
of 'home_mailbox', both commented:
#home_mailbox = Mailbox
#home_mailbox = Maildir/
I have only uncommented the second one after reading the first reply in
this thread. Maybe a bug in the main.cf file of my postfix release
(2.0.16-r1)?

Thanks: after creating the subdirs as you suggested now mutt recognizes
.maildir as a a mailbox. My question is then: why weren't they created
automatically before?
