I don't usually say this... But if you're brave, consider taking a look
at a 2.6.x kernel at some point. With 2.6.x I get an extra 25% battery
life thanks to the cpufreq stuff, and my PCMCIA USB2 card works.

Of course, please remember that Gentoo probably still doesn't officially
support 2.6.x kernels on x86 blah blah blah own risk experimental
flying monkeys.
