I have gentoo running on a Dell inspiron 5100 and it worked out pretty
well.  Obviously, knowing your hardware and intended uses will paly a
part during make menuconfig but beyond that it should be the same.  If
the live cd misses something during it's startup (wireless, pcmcia etc)
remember that the genkernel script will likely miss it to. Should you
decide to go that route.

in fact, I just realized I have never installed gentoo on a desktop,
only laptops :)
