I second this request for information :-) I am currently running the 2.4.24 vanilla kernel on a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, but would like to migrate to 2.6, in particular to use the SpeedStep support to get longer battery life. But I am a bit uncertain if it is safe. In particular * Would it be wise to wait for the 2.6 kernels to become "official", I suppose this would happen in Gentoo 2004.0 (Real Soon Now?). * Do I need to change other packages (glibc, top, ps, ...) I seem to remember having problems with some of these packages back in the ancient days when switching from 2.0 to 2.2 or from 2.2 to 2.4. I am new to Gentoo, the idea of recompiling glibc on a running machine worries me a bit (I can keep the old kernel around, just in case, but the old glibc?) * Will my closed-source kernel modules work? I realize noone can tell me this for sure, but is there any hope or have the interfaces changed too much. I use the following: - NVIDIA driver (necessary, since the free one does not work on this laptop). I saw some other posts indicating that it works. - A driver for the built-in Conexant winmodem. I got a Mandrake Linux driver from a French modem maker apparently using the same chip. Miraculously, it works. Jakob ===== Jakob Schiotz, CAMP and Dept. of Physics, Tech.
