Well if your kernel supports supermount (you usually have to patch your 
kernel), then removable media is supported, ie you can eject and insert a 
cd whenever you want and it will be mounted automatically, this is what 
Mandrake linux has.

There certainly are kernels for gentoo which are supermount enabled, you 
can get one of them if your default kernel doesnt support it.
