you can manually mask/unmask the various packages, but do yourself a favour:
DON'T run a partial ~x86/x86 system. it's just a world of hurt. seriously,
i'm running a full ~x86 system with very few problems, and what problems i
run into, are easily solved with a trip to forums.gentoo.org.
when your run a half & half system, you're constantly fighting with portage to
mask/unmask various packages every time you do an emerge -uD world.
