That may have been the case with portage .49, but in .50 the new
package.keywords stuff makes this almost completely painless. The man
pages contain full details, but basically .50 supports per-package
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS by way of /etc/portage/package.keywords . For example,
my mostly-stable ultra10 has:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] ciaranm 0 0.99 $ cat /etc/portage/package.keywords
sys-apps/portage             ~sparc
x11-base/xfree               ~sparc
x11-wm/fluxbox               ~sparc
app-portage/gentoolkit       ~sparc
app-portage/gentoolkit-dev   ~sparc
sys-kernel/sparc-dev-sources ~sparc

whilst everything else is running at sparc.
