Well, I'm running a mixed system here too, because I needed some features
from some packages still marked ~x86. In fact, it's even more painless,
if you use emerge -uU world.
Of course, you don't get any new ~x86 packages though, but at least it doesn't
downgrade. But most of the time I install ~x86 only because it has
something I really need and afterwards I'd only like to install new
stable versions.

Now with portage 2.0.50 it's of course even better with the ability to
define individual keywords to the packages. Big thanks to the developers!
