One suggestion for future versions of portage could be to split the world file into two different files. One is maintained by the user and one is maintained by portage. Portage will add and remove packages in its own file, that is a package which is recorded in the users world file and removed by portage will lead to an entry like -category/package in the portage world file overriding the user entry.
Is there a tool available which can be used to maintain the world file just like ufed for use flags?

Use extended attributes on your filesystem and set the 'sticky bit' which prevents even root from altering or changing the file in question?
He doesn't want the file to be impossible to change, he just wants
portage to *append* to the file rather than trashing it, which makes
perfect sense to me. Why can't we organize our world file as we like?
