The script is a little overkill IMO. I just have a daily cron job that runs
esync --nocolor --nospinner
The output of esync will be mailed to you (assuming you have a MTA setup, of course). If you're not familiar with esync output, it lists all the packages that have been updated since your last sync. Those packages for which updates are available have a "U" (like emerge) next to them.
