I don't understand the confusion. There are 4 ebuild in question. Only 2 seem to be of particular importance in this scenario. Those are squid-2.5.7-r5 and squid-2.5.6-r3 (at least that's what it says in my recently sync'd portage tree). Now, when you put >www-proxy/squid-2.5.7 it wants to go down to the 2.5.6 version because the other option (2.5.7-r5) is higher. Same with the other case. What version do you wan to be installed? What are you attempting to mask? Perhaps you have 2.5.7-r2 because of an older ebuild. In that case, if you put >www-proxy/squid-2.5.7-r2 it shouldn't downgrade (because you aren't masking the currently installed package).
