Question: when did you perform your last emerge sync? The reason I am asking: as of today Squid Version v2.5.7-r5 will be found both in the stable and in the unstable (~x86) branch. Since you're having trouble with v2.5.7-r4 it might well be that you suffer from "unstable" influences. I suggest to first emerge sync. Then the entry >www-proxy/squid-2.5.7-r2 or >=www-proxy/squid-2.5.7-r4 in /etc/portage/package.mask should protect your current Squid properly.
