So far, the hard drive passed two (small) smart tests started by commands:
# smartctl -c -t short -d sat /dev/sdc
and
# smartctl -t conveyance -d sat /dev/sdc
as is indicated by
# smartctl -l selftest -d sat /dev/sdc
