I look for "push scanning", ie can I go up to the printer and scan from there. My HP M477 has that, it does CIFS and email (amongst others). So I just configure it with the appropriate Samba share. I would want to configure email to point to my home server but don't know whether I can get it right.
But this approach doesn't need any linux drivers, the scanner just scans the document, connects to the CIFS server, and dumps the scan into the folder.
