Could you be more specific, please? How is it harmful? What happens to your system when you use --deep? Why is it that despite --deep being recommended[1] and used (I assume) by the majority of Gentoo users, I haven't heard of any ill effects of using --deep? (You are the first and so far the only person to recommend against it.) I *always* use --deep when upgrading because then I am assured of getting *all* of the dependencies of packages I am emerging. I am not aware of *ever* having system problems due to using --deep. How do you prevent packages from being installed that are missing dependencies?
