Uh-huh! I'll give it a try.

The other big question is, what to make of this error when using something 
like "mplayer tv:// blablabla":

v4l2: current audio mode is : MONO
v4l2: ioctl request buffers failed: Invalid argument
v4l2: 0 frames successfully processed, 0 frames dropped.


The ioctl failure doesn't seem to be a permission problem.
