I do not really know where to write this. I have read this web page:
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/userrel/userrep.xml
It states:
What does a User Representative do?
* Present the views, and represent the interests, of all elements of our
diverse user base.
* Channel information back to the users regarding proceedings of and decisions
made in meetings.
So I feel this might be the right place to say this. Please, forgive me if i
am wrong, and let me know to whom should I write this to.
I am a very happy user of gentoo, and I have been using it for about a year
and a half. I reacently have had many problems installing gentoo into a new
laptop, mainly because the gentoo live CD has a very old kernel. I have
finally used Sabayon live CD as to be able to follow the gentoo handbook. I
believe this is a big problem (as it makes it difficult for new users to get
into gentoo) with a very easy solution: to update the kernel or to suggest in
the handbook to use other live CDs.
I have read different threads in the gentoo forums about the openess of gentoo
for newcomers, and I do agree that gentoo is a distribution you have to work
on it. Nevertheless, I believe that having a live CD with a kernel that does
not support new SATA/PATA devices makes it almost impossible to follow the
Gentoo Handbook.
In summary, to take into consideration newcomers in the sense that they can
install gentoo following the handbook.
Thanks!
The kernel in the 2007.0 release is 2.6.19 which is new enough for any
installation and with libata being in the kernel since 2.4.27 there will
be no problems for SATA devices as long as you aren't using a 1.2 release.
Could you tell us the kernel release with uname -r please.
This is unlikely to be a problem with the release or the kernel, more
likely corrupted download or PEBKAC.
Every distro has it's place in the linux family considering what they
want to achieve - speed, stability, usability, etc. Gentoo has achieved
it's place where it wants to sit and it is not likely to change.
