Dan, No personal attacks intended here, just a meeting summary. I recall Kenneth Coale pointing out, ³iron experiments are about how nature works; commercial ocean seeding is about getting nature to work for us.² It was my opinion from the Wood¹s Hole meeting that Planktos was furthest out on a limb and that Climos was acting (and has acted since) responsibly.
Thank you also for clarifying my thinking. When I wrote "Our ignorance of a subject is a justification for not doing field experiments. Do what you like behind closed doors" I had firmly in mind SRM (my major concern) in which atmospheric deployment could trigger a large public backlash. Please note I support research in the form of enhanced computer modeling and laboratory studies to advance basic understanding of atmospheric processes and climate interactions, but I am enough of a student of Ed Lorenz to worry about large-scale deployment of SRM. There is a different tradition in OIF. The bottle and patch experiments were initially aimed at understanding natural processes and later, when the geoengineers arrived, turned toward speeding up the biological carbon pump as a possible solution to global warming. What I didn¹t wish to imply in my comment was that what was established experimental practice in one field (patch experiments in oceanography) could be generalized to all fields (including atmospheric science).
