In this group in May 2013 Svetlana Tkachenko has interesting exchanges with Mark Capron in a post titled “Power-generating system to transfer heat from Earth to upper troposphere”. Several patents describe devices that generate energy utilizing surface level hot air (generally also quite humid) as the heat source, with high atmosphere as the heat sink (for instance US patent 2013/0229015). The devices provide updraft to initiate and control large-scale air circulation. If heat is transferred from the surface to the stratosphere and then to the outer space, then the result is surface cooling!
