Given the level of interest this has generated, I should tell you that I
did find a rather simple solution within AutoCAD. There are several
freeware LISP programs that run as sort of macro commands. The one I used
was really slick and simple (I was able to use it without any previous
exposure to AutoCAD) and can be found at

I know this doesn't help those without access to AutoCAD, but it might be a
good place to start.
