Actually the map I've pasted there comes from Sigma: http://sigma.openplans.org/?zoom=14&lat=37.61537&lon=-77.48141&layers=BT (at the moment it seems to be down or very very slow...) Ivan's long term idea to use OSM data is the strongest imho, it shows an open source server rendering community created data, if we can pull good styling for it, it's going to be very very good.
