So, I don't think the GeoExt based layer preview has been discussed on
this mailing list yet. If anyone was wondering about that, here is a
bit more about it.

GeoExt is a community effort to build a library of GUI components for
use in browser-based GIS applications. It combines the ExtJS
(http://extjs.com/) framework with OpenLayers for map visualization, and
intends to use web mapping standards to create a toolkit that can be
reused with all OGC-standards compliant servers; the focus is currently
on WFS and WMS.

One application that we at OpenGeo would like to create using GeoExt is
a GeoExplorer: a generic WMS client that can simply be set up on a
server alongside a WMS service and automatically configure itself with
the layers, allowing the user to mix and match layers from the service
at will, perform GetFeatureInfo queries, view legends, etc.

>From GeoExplorer, a GeoServer preview application would be a minor
customization, and, in our opinion, a nice addition to GeoServer. The
customizations we had in mind were things like highlighting some of the
more interesting output formats that GeoServer provides, automatically
configuring the preview application for out-of-the-box interactive
mapping, allowing the user to try out different GeoServer options like
tiling and antialiasing. You can see our plans and design thoughts
regarding these applications at
http://projects.opengeo.org/geoext/wiki/GeoExplorer
and
http://projects.opengeo.org/geoext/wiki/apps/gspreview

We welcome feedback. However, the actual coding has barely started for
GeoExplorer, so the GeoServer preview is still some time off. We will
periodically update the test instance at
