One quick question. You are aware of the fact that mysql does not implement the full OpenGIS specification.
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/functions-that-test-spatial-relationships-between-geometries.html Relationship tests are always based on the MBR of the geometries. For example, an intersection test of 2 polygons is handled as an intersection test of the MBRs of these polygons. The result may not be what you are expecting. I would recommend postgis.
