Hi,

if you don't mind having 50 layers to start with, then WMS is there to
give you what you need, without the need to configure a group layer.
In the LAYERS param of your WMS GetMap request, you just provide a
comma separated list of the names of your 50 states layers.

Other than that, the SQL view is a viable and easy to configure option.
