Besides what Andreas already suggested, and if you are game trying something
a bit new and experimental, another option would be to try out the
"aggregating data store"
(http://geo-solutions.blogspot.it/2011/09/aggregate-and-republish-from-several.html),
while not available on a release, you can get it for a nightly build here:
http://gridlock.opengeo.org/geoserver/trunk/community-latest/

(it's the aggregate-plugin one).

Performance wise it will be better than setting up 50 layers in a layer group,
though probably the best option, given that you have everything in the same
database, is to create a view in the database that unions all the tables and
publish that one.
