Hi Allan,
ESRI stuff is generally designed to play nicely with ESRI stuff - they like
trying to sell the entire ESRI stack to you. It can integrate with other
software, but as you can see from Andrea's response, it's not readily supported
in the Open Source world.
Another option is to take the longer-term goal of moving your data out of
ArcSDE into either the Oracle that's behind it (and then just use ArcSDE to as
connection-middleware for ArcMap; but I don't believe that's required any more
as of 10.x), or switch to PostGres/PostGIS. If you have a long term strategic
plan to use more open source, either of them (but especially PostGIS) would
support that goal, and reduce licensing costs too.

your enviroment requires proprietary software that core devs do not have access
to
(the SDE support was developed in a time when one core developer had a customer
with the system available for tests, as far as I know that's no more the case).
A commercial support contract allowing the developers to buy a license, or to
spend time connecting to your system under some non disclosure agreement,
seems the only viable option
