My first response was killed by a spam filter, so here is a second try,
less verbose.
Looking into the GDAL and jp2 extensions, I see the word kakadu in some jar
file names, so I believe that Geoserver is using those?
I had to Google Kakadu to find out more. Apparently, this is also some
licensed add-on which I do not have. Is that important?
My first choice would have been ecw, but this format has licensing issues
which I want to avoid by using jp2. This worked well some years ago, and I
had no size issues then, even if I cannot say how big (in pixels) those
images were.
