It isn't clear what the target user audience is for GeoTools.

For the 2.0/2.1 era of GeoTools, there is a considerable set of examples
and snippets and other documentation to help in building GeoTools
applications. We modified the Spearfish demo to work with DB2.

Many of these are no longer valid for the 2.2 GeoTools release and
development is moving on to the 2.3 and 2.4 releases of GeoTools.

From my perspective, it is just as important to have current user
documentation to support usability as it is to require Junit testcases to
ensure the functionality.

There is a phenomenal amount of functionality in GeoTools which is
great. This can be the basis of powerful spatial applications. But unless
one is a hardcore Java developer and devotes much of one's life to
understanding the progress of GeoTools development, it is very difficult to
exploit.

I realize that much of the development is on a volunteer basis and people
only have so many cycles to contribute. I would love to help improve the
documentation but I don't have the time either.

As the developer/maintainer of the DB2 plug-in, I would like to refer DB2
Spatial Extender developers/users to GeoTools as a way to exploit our
product. The updates to our spatial offerings web site will point to
GeoTools, GeoServer and uDig as ways to exploit our product functionality
as an alternative to using commercial GIS software.
