Oh, it occurred to me that having a changing fid for features
simply breaks the notion of an identifier and makes it hard
for client apps to work against them (especially those unaware
of versioning).

Think of a client app that uses a fid filter to retrive
"people.fred.432456" and gets "people.fred.432457" instead
because someone else modified the feature in the meantime.
May that break the client? I would say yes, it just a matter of
how fids are used.
