Thanks Martin; is this the kind of thing we should make a maven plugin 
for? Or should we just write our README to be a generic GeoTools 2.4 
Alpha readment (and then change it to Beta when we get to Release 
Candidate Status and so on ...)

I just don't like unpacking the source code to see GeoTools @VERSION@ in 
as the first line of the readme. (Although that does in fact scream 
"Alpha Software"...)
