I won't cut my wrists while deciding which one of the two options applies to you, hence I will give you the answer you seek. The code you are looking at, which I assume is related to palette building, is an improved version of the SUN code, which was buggy and not working on RenderedImage since it was designed for BufferedImage only. I should probably send this code back to the imageio guys but it would anyway take ages before we could use it in a stable release, hence I decided to include it right inside geotools. Truth is, that the code has changed so much from the initial version that I wonder if we still have to retain SUN's copyright, dunno. If this piece of code does not let you sleep at night, you can freely remove it from the codebase (we might want to check if anyone else is using it) Thanks for your patience and understanding; I really appreciate your hard work on these issues (for real), but above all I really appreciate your humor and kindness (well, this is a joke)!
