I have not looked at it recently; although that combination 
(PropertyName or Function) seems like it may be a common thing; kind of 
wish they isolated that in Filter syntax; rather then the current split 
between Filter vs "id based filter".

Okay - the subject matter is important to me; and as I said the topic 
has come up again in the definition of Symbolizer. We should consider 
the ideas together and come up with something sane.
