Hi Mark

You may want to give my Java/Swing SLD editor a try: AtlasStyler. It starts 
via JavaWebStart and allows you to create SLDs using higher level concepts 
like quantile, unique values, labeling etc.. I just release a very first beta 
today... Check daily for improvements...
