Bah, it's come to my attention I've been replying to individual people
when I've been meaning to post my replies more generally to the list,
I blame gmail's conversation threading :)

Anyway you've all missed out on frankly fantastic examples using
Kittens and Puppies, but here's the short(ish) version as I can't
quite bring myself to go thru it all again :)

1) I've added the correct attribution to OSM on the image used in the blog post.

2) The shape data is basically the result of our Where On Earth (WoE)
database, filtered by Aaron's knowledge + stuff we've learned about
the WoE dataset over the years + interpretive dance + flickr user's
knowledge + maths + continuous feedback. And not really derived from
whatever imagery happens to be on the underlying map tiles, although
those tiles obviously help some people place photos in the first place
(i.e. it would still work even if the map tiles were just blurry
satellite imagery, which is actually the case in several places).

These new shapes should probably be thought of as WoE dataset's
polygons + Flickr Special Sauce.
