If you are off the grid, you can use satellite communications.  Here in the
states, we have Hughes Net (static operations).  If you are moving around,
your best bet would be a portable satellite radio.  Those can get kind of
pricy, so there are some outfits that will rent them for project work (see
below).

Depending on the application it may also be worth looking into long range
wifi.
