Dear (Geo)wankers,
I'm pleased to announce that there is a new release of mapnik
(0.2.5a), together with a new website - http://mapnik.org. For
those who haven't come across it, one of the project's goals is to
provide high-quality anti-aliasing rendering of geo data - think
Google Maps as for USA and UK (and not Japan - yuk! horrid). But
this is not the only goal :-P
This release offers:
1. new build system
2. new INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
3. new symbolizers (polygon/line patterns)
4. lots of fixes.
There were a few postings on this list about ideas and projects for
which mapnik can be a good companion IMHO. Just one example off the
top of my head: Multi-Resolution Dataset Wiki - documents, scripts,
how-to's - great! But why not give everyone Free software to render
all those layers into AJAX viewer compatible tiles as well?
Please, whatever you do, don't start yet another tiling scheme! Or if
you do, then make sure it's the one everyone adopts! I think its time
the community develops a common scheme. Also, I encourage you to
consider adding even the most basic ability to do WMS with Mapnik.
Even if you only support WMS 1.0.0. It's not hard and the dividends
to the community would be amplified.
Allan
