Hi Annalee,

What a great question! I wouldn't say I have one particular person or theory in mind but I do feel like there are a lot of ideas in the hopper sometimes. Here's a few:

. SimCity, big time
. the real-time globe scene in SnowCrash
. Steven Johnson's _Emergence_
. Anselm's post from a year ago that got me on here in the first place
(that I still haven't responded to!)
. the Centre for Landscape Research at U Toronto
(used their software for my first geoviz project, c. 1996?)
. practically everything related to urban design I've ever read
. Jane Jacobs, John Muir, John McPhee and Annie Dillard
. Ben Discoe & vterrain.org

Call me a big hippie but I feel like I should include "nature itself," too. That great swimming hole outside of Charlottesville I used to go to. The Channel Islands. Tahoe. The little patch of dirt I run up to on 19th St.

And not just nature built the built environment, also; I feel like I get a lot of ambient inspiration just having been able to live in places like Santa Barbara and now San Francisco.

I feel like I'm missing a lot but there's a start maybe?

I'm in the early stages of researching an article about map hackers for Wired magazine -- I know the term "map hackers" is vague, but that will change. What I'm wondering is whether folks here have been inspired by any particular philosophies or theories of geography in their work? Is there a Norbert Wiener or Lawrence Lessig of the geowank world? Somebody who is geeky but also policy-minded or philosophical, whose ideas have inspired you to make map tools or build geolocation tech?
