I'll go with Jo on the extraordinary influence of the Situationists
on me, at least -- especially in influencing my understanding of what
a map could or should be. I also agree with Raj on Kevin Lynch's work.
You might also want to take a look at Alison Sant's essay "Redefining
the Basemap" for a brief overview of selected intellectual movements
in mapping. Alison and I taught a class two years ago on using
wireless networks as platforms for urban art practice. Much of that
class concerned map-making -- the bibliography is here: http://
www.alisant.net/sitespecific/bibliography.html.
Note that Leondardo Electronic Almanac will have a special issue out
(hopefully) soon on locative media that should also have some useful
stuff.
