As one of the people leading these efforts, Christiana Figueres is charged with bringing together very different groups - governments, business communities, scientists, and the public - to develop solutions. And this means dealing with a host of conflicts, including differing priorities among countries. A native of Costa Rica, Ms. Figueres is the first leader of the UN climate change secretariat from a developing country. She was appointed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in May 2010. She has been involved in climate change negotiations since 1995, representing Costa Rica as well as Latin America and the Caribbean. She founded the Centre for Sustainable Development of the Americas, a nonprofit think tank for climate change policy and capacity building, which she directed until 2003. A widely published author on the design of climate solutions, she has been a frequent adviser to the private sector on how to play a leadership role in climate mitigation. Ms. Figueres holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics, and a certificate in organizational development from Georgetown University.
