I spent a pile of $$ on habitrail links that they chewed on and went to the bathroom
in. The tower they climbed up it and dug and pooped and peed in the corner (big smelly
mess). The suction cup on the safari wheel they ate when it fell off, got another for
free and they ate it too. Wired the wheel to the side of the cage and then they ate
the center peg of the wheel and the wheel was garbage. Gerbils had pups and Clifford
is in his 10 gallon with a ton of toys, Spikey is in another 10 gallon with 5 pups and
cardboard tubes only. (The pups are much better by the way :-)). Anyways, I won't
waste another cent on plastic anything, besides the smell it has when they go to the
bathroom on it, it's frustrating to see it chewed up. They don't have a wheel at all
now, I'm not sure what type to buy that will be safe and not chewed. PS> scored a 35
gallon acquarium today from a fella at my work for free, and came home to pups that
look much better, only two had any type of nasal discha!
!
rge, it was dry and wiped away easily. I am still using the antibiotic but I think it
was the aspen, any ideas? And how long do I continue with the antibiotics?? PSS>
Acquariums are the way to go for sure!

Ah, THOSE! I have one of those that I bought from an eBay auction. They did
exactly that to the wheel inside, but I got a replacement wheel. You can
buy the Safari Habitrail wheels separately (they are I think $9.99 at
Petsmart, which is not a bad price considering that a gerbil cage without a
wheel is pretty useless). The Safari wheels come with a suction cup that
you can stick on there, and use it to stick to the side of the cage. I put
one in a glass aquarium holding the 4 lb gerbils I got from Doug, and it
hasn't fallen off once, and they use it. I got another one to try in the
Hartz cage, and I am going to place it so that the suction cup is next to
the hole where the previous wheel was, so they won't be able to chew there.
Other than that, this particular cage is ok, so far. I wouldn't get another
one, though.
