I don't remember how long I had my gerbils when I was a girl, but they were
in plastic and never chewed out. Oh, yes, they chewed, but never through.
I have my two in a Safari cage but I inspect it at least daily when I check
for fresh food and water. I don't think anyone needs to throw out anything
just because some gerbils have been problematic. I DO think the cage needs
to be inspected frequently, though.
