A marmota is a marmot. They live in high altitudes, like Pikes Peak. The Spanish-speaking person with whom I was corresponding earlier this year referred to gerbils as "gerbiles." My best guess is that this person is from Uruguay. I don't know any Central or South American Spanish speakers who have hamsters, so I couldn't say with regard to them, but I bet they are hamsters, with an accent over the "a", just as was stated earlier.
