Quite honestly i would cancel the vet appointment.  99% of these injuries
heal up perfectly well by themselves.  Over the next few days, the exposed
bone will just wither away.  The gerbil will be left with a shorter but
otherwise perfectly functional and healthy tail.  When this happens, i just
bathe the tail in soap and water ans let nature take its course.
