Our Gerbils LOVE ducttape too. I tape the wheels, and then tape the wheels
to the cage (so they can use them without burying it) and they chew the
things off about once a week. They clear the wheel every two weeks or so.
Very munchy gerbils I have.

Incidentally, Othello has devleoped a rather acrobatic trick, where he can
climb on top of his wheel, without immoilising it. He then balances on it,
chewing on the cage lid, untill he falls off. Repeat. Sigh.
