You might try the water bottles I use: the capsule-shaped ones that have
the drinking tube sticking straight out of the bottom. They're about
$2.50 from pets.com, last time I looked. If you hang them from the cage
lid, a couple of inches away from the side and back of the tank, there's
absolutely no way they can be chewed on since they're suspended from a
paperclip-like wire and the gerbils won't be able to lean on them
without pushing them out of the way (also since they're capsule-shaped,
there are no edges). As an added bonus, the gerbils won't be able to
slam the bottle against the sides of the cage and make all that noise
(they'll find other ways, I'm sure!).
