That is interesting that your gerbils make a nest out of the bedding materials.
Sometimes mine construct tunnels, but they get use them to get around, not to
sleep in.
I always have several boxes (cardboard) in the tanks, that are in various stages
of being gnawed on, and my gerbils always have used one of those for sleeping in.
I assumed that they'd want some sort of box to have/raise their pups in (?)
