I don't use nesting boxes or houses for my gerbils either. One thing that I
have noticed when I use such things for my breeding pairs is that the
gerbils have a tendency to do a lot of digging and scratching causing the
box or house to get knocked over on to the pups. Also the pups can get stuck
between the box and the wall of the tank.
If you do use such things, be sure it is something that the gerbils can't
move so it can't squish a pup.
