Hello,
I agree with ya...
I happen to live on a farm and it has been my observation that practically
ALL aniamls "mount" each other to assert dominance as opposed to
"fullfilling the 'need' when the opposite sex isn't around". Our cows at
home do this all year 'round... EVEN when the Bull IS present....I've seen
other animals do it as well (even young animals...as well as fish).... and
neither species seems to mind it in the least....
When I used to have 12+ gerbils, they were always doing it, too....
So, personally, I don't see anything wrong with it....that is... if it
doesn't bother you.... I could see how it would be a little awkward if
there were young children or guests around when they sudddenly put on an
"odd display" - that kind of thing can seriuosly embarrass some people if
they arn't used to being around animals very much.....but I don't see a
reason to separate them at all as long as they arn't hurting each other
(gerbils do best in colonies anyway)...
Good luck...
-Adie

Males mounting each other is probably more related to establishing dominance
than sexual urge.
