Note also that both UPS and RPS in specifically prohiit ANY living creatures
in their shipping codes.  It's not worth it to them to squish an animal.
Having worked at UPS, the way it would be discovered is:
1.    A worker hears scrabbling in the box and pulls it.  Not likely due to
the volume we had to keep, but possible.
2.    (Far more likely) The box falls off a belt and breaks open, which
happened quite a bit (there were guys on staff who JUST put boxes back
together.  Some of those belts, particularly for the lighter, smaller boxes,
were up to 50ft. off the ground.  While your gerbil could probably survive a
fall that far sans box, it'd kill him if he was in it.
