Gender Confusion

Hello everyone,   I currently have one male and one female in my 50 gallon tank...but would like to get another gerbil to add.  I know that females fight, but I also know that males fight over the protection of their offspring...so I'm not sure what to do...or would I be better off with just these 2 for now?   Help, Jason
